They’re spreading panic in the Rhône-Alpes region. Wolves had completely disappeared from France, but now they are returning via the Italian Alps. There are reckoned to be nearly 2,000 in France at the present time and the species is protected. But in the mountains the wolf isn’t making any friends. Wolves are increasingly attacking flocks of sheep. Last winter, it was even reported that a pack went right through the middle of a village! As a result some hunters won’t hesitate to shoot these canines, in contravention of the law. Should we fear the wolf? Animal protection groups assure us that the animal is harmless to man?
