What are labels worth? | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

AOP (Appellation d’origine protégée-Guaranteed Origin), IGP (Guaranteed Geographical Origin)… Free-range products, flavour of the year: these logos clearly displayed on the packing are supposed to guarantee the quality or the provenance of food products. According to a survey more than one French person in two claims to trust them. Yet behind these recommendations often lurk some surprises. Alongside labels that are strictly within State regulations, consumers find some guarantees that seem to be more like advertising slogans. Can you trust an olive oil that bears the recommendation “From Provence”? What does the label “Flavour of the year” represent? Does a Bayonne ham necessarily come from a farm in the Basque country? As many consumers are getting lost in the jungle of labelling, we investigate those labels.
