The new slaves of the road | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

There are now thousands of low-cost truck drivers working in France. Turks arrive in France on charter flights while their trucks, loaded with goods, are delivered by ship. And there are also Polish, Czech and Slovakian drivers who work for the major French haulage groups through an ingenious network of subsidiaries. For these drivers there are no truck motels. They live on the side of the road or on parking lots. And French drivers are not immune to this cheap competition, three times less expensive on average! They are forced to cheat on their working hours and to drive more dangerously in order to remain competitive. A rush for profit that can lead to real tragedies on the highways. Such as the death of a young car-driver in Charente a few months ago. A department, where, every night, the police hand out tickets to exhausted foreign drivers who stop to spend the night illegally in the emergency lane.
