It was an outburst of violence that took everybody by surprise in the quiet neighbourhood of the 13^th arrondissement of Paris. A high school student of 17 was beaten by a gang of youths of his own age and left for dead on the pavement. What did they have against him? He was walking around a territory that was not his: the victim carried the logo “75014” on his backpack… the postal code of the neighbouring arrondissement. How did this mindset of territory, which was previously believed to be limited to the sensitive housing projects of the suburbs, spread to the centre of the city? How do you join a gang that “holds” its neighbourhood, prepared to use firearms to “defend” it? Prepared to trigger a stand-up fight over a mean look or a cigarette? The police have made it their special aim to prevent this type of confrontation by monitoring the provocative statements of the gangs on the Internet.
