Road casualty, a forgotten life | M6 | Zone Interdite
Victim of a hit-and-run driver, Isabelle Piccioto survived, but has lost her memory. On January 15 2006 we were filming the minutes immediately following the accident in the Place des Nations, Paris. Isabelle was locking her car when she was hit in the legs and thrown into the air, landing with her body broken 32 meters away. After three months in reanimation, Isabelle came out of her coma. Since then, she has been relearning how to live. Her brain suffered much damage: although Isabelle has recovered the use of language, she has lost her memory. 80% of her life has been wiped out. With the permission of her husband and children, we accompanied her courageous battle to rebuild her life: the daily sessions of physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy, etc. aimed at giving her back the maximum autonomy.Today, the mother of three is still fragile and dependent.Over many months, we come to realise that the shock wave of such an accident extends far beyond the mere injured person. The lives of all Isabelle’s family and friends have been turned upside down: will her teenage son, till then a brilliant student, be able to complete his studies? How will Isabelle’s husband organise his life know that he is married to a disabled person? How do they accept and love Isabelle, now that she has very little in common with what she was? A painful question that they all ask themselves. We have shared in the energy expended by those close to her to defend and support her up to the trial of the driver, which brings a close to the judicial aspect of this case.
