Prison warders: men under pressure | M6 | Enquête Exclusive
For three months we followed the daily lives of the warders in French prisons.A plunge into a world where everything depends on the vigilance of these men who have to cope not only with over-population, but a growing number of psychologically fragile inmates. It is estimated that in France today at least one prisoner in five suffers from mental illness! In the opinion of many doctors they should not be in prison, but treated in special psychiatric hospitals. Because of the lack of places they are not separated from other prisoners and find themselves in the same quarters, even in the same cells. How are prison warders managing this increasingly tense situation? How are they trained to deal with prisoners suffering from mental illness? Finally, to cope with the most dangerous prisoners, the Minister of Justice created the ERIS (regional swat squads), an elite corps of prison warders, responsible for dealing equally with a prison riot or controlling a madman who’s gone off his head. How do they prepare for the various disaster scenarios in these high-pressure prisons?
