If Miss France is a tradition, Miss Colombia is a religion! Every November 11, in Carthegena, they hold one of the oldest beauty contests in the world. The event is broadcast live on all the TV channels. The beauty queen is usually white, rich, with remodeled breasts. Wealthy tourists park their yachts to watch the chic and glamorous show, held in a luxury hotel. That same evening there’s another election: the Miss Shantytown contest. Pretty young women parade in swimsuits. However, here there are no canapes or champagne and the contest takes place in an electrified football stadium. The contestants come from the poor quarters. Often their familes will run up debts to pay for their hairdos and costumes. This year, for the first time, the two contests will march together during the national parade.
