LOW PRICES, BIG BUSINESS: THE NEW KINGS OF BAZAARS | Capital | M6

With the arrival of online giants such as Temu, Shein and Action, we thought they were outdated and doomed to disappear. But now, bazaars, our good old brick-and-mortar variety stores where you can find anything and everything, are enjoying a renaissance thanks to their low prices. These new kings of bazaars are called ‘MAXI BAZAR’, ‘DROGUERIE CHIC’, ‘C’EST DEUX EUROS’ and ‘BAZARLAND’. There are more than 2,500 stores of this type in France.

Sponges for £2, branded stationery sold at half price, cheap kitchen accessories and furniture for £24.90. With the crisis in purchasing power and inflation, these stores have become a refuge for many French people: seven out of ten consumers say they frequent these stores specialising in endless discounts to treat themselves at low prices.

Forget about cluttered rooms filled with haphazardly stored items gathering dust. Marc de Bisschop and Patrick Georges are now at the helm of small empires. They have revolutionised the sector by creating chic, well-located shops to sell cheap products. They remain formidable businessmen, outstanding negotiators and clever operators who persuade us to buy useless items, each with their own techniques for scraping together market share by the penny.

Where do they find these inexpensive products? How do they manage to make money while keeping prices so low? And what are their secrets for staying ahead of the ultra-aggressive competition from Chinese online platforms?

An investigation into a £10 billion market…
