Every night, it’s the same old dance: forty or so trucks from all over Europe arrive in the port of Cherbourg bound for England.And every night, the security people discover some twenty illegal immigrants in the trailers.At Cherbourg, but also at Caen, Calais and Dunkerque. All the Channel ports are facing the same problem. Groups of refugees try at all costs to get aboard the ferries. There are some 500, fleeing poverty or war in their own country and for whom England is a sort of Eldorado. They have nothing to lose. But their assaults are exasperating the truck drivers more each day. Insults, fights, gun shots. Over the last few months, tension in the French ports has risen.In Cherbourg the authorities have made major investments to turn the port into a secure base.Surveillance cameras and over 3 miles of fencing and barbed wire have been set up.
