Burma: the monks revolt | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

One week after the troubles, we went to Burma to assess the extent of the repression that followed the protest by monks. An undercover report! Reporters are not allowed into the country.A lead curtain has dropped back over the country. The military has arrested all known opponents and anybody who took part, even remotely, in the September demonstrations. It is thought there were between 30 and 200 dead and over 3000 arrests. Our investigation took us from Rangoon to Mandalay. We found opposition people on the run. We looked at detention centres. There were organised roundups by the police and the army. What happened? Where were those arrested taken? We met the International Red Cross and some outraged diplomats. The biggest sign of the current crackdown is the empty monasteries. Where did the monks go? We went to look for them? They all live in fear and the simple act of talking to Westerners puts them at risk. But the military also attacked artists. We met the Moustache Brothers: a satirical theatre group whose leader was arrested. Despite the threats and pressure from the regime they continue to perform and in their theatre they display giant photos of Aung San Suu Ki, the leader of the democratic opposition. It’s an incredible act of defiance towards the dictatorship. They don’t conceal their faces because they want, as they say, to show the world we are alive!””
