France: migrants, welcome or not welcome | M6 | 66 minutes
Ever since they saw the images of the horror truck in Austria and the terrible photo of tiny Aylan washed up on a Turkish beach, French people have been in shock. A never-before-witnessed surge of generosity has erupted spontaneously. How to help these migrants flooding in from Syria, Iran, Sudan or Eritrea? And at the same time how to protect their reception sites? We go to the heart of rural France to encounter two very different situations. In Peyrelevade, in the Corrèze, an idyllic situation seems to be emerging. The 60 migrants settled there since last April appear to be welcome, bring life to the villages and plant the gardens. All is for the best in the best possible world. However, in Loudun, in the Poitou, the debate is raging. The state has recently declared the opening of a reception center in this village of 7,000. The mayor is presented with a fait accompli and the municipal opposition claims that 80% of the population is against the arrival of the migrants. Others claim that these polls have no value. A local dispute has broken out. We go to meet these French people and these migrants, those who understand each other and those who don’t and we shall see how, after the emotional impact of the photos, a new life is being arranged in the villages that are receiving the refugees.
