Fires in greece: miracle escape in peloponesia | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

The inhabitants of the village of Frixa, near Olympia, in Peloponesia, had a miracle escape. On Monday, August 27, when the fires were at their height, they were totally encircled by the flames, so they took refuge on the village basketball court. While the majority of the 250 inhabitants had fled Frixa, a crew from the Greek private television channel, Antenna 1,also trapped by the fire, filmed the panic experienced by a dozen or so villagers who chose to remain near their homes. The images are impressive: without the concrete of the basketball court, which prevented the flames from approaching, the inhabitants would have been burned alive, like many other victims in Greece. A count on September 3 recorded 64 dead. A crew from our agency returned to Frixa to find the survivors of the basketball court. A woman of 75, a couple of farmers and a taxi driver tell how they survived the inferno.
