This summer in Morocco a little girl of 11 died as a result of a beating from her mistress, who accused her of failing to wash her husband’s shirts correctly. The images of this child’s body covered in bruises revolted the country and exposed to the glare of day the scandal of these young girls employed as maids of all work. There are 800,000 of them, mostly from extremely poor families in the countryside. Although child labour is forbidden in Morocco, parents send them to middle class families in the hope of improving their lot. But very often these young girls, who are exploited at will, are also sexually abused and beaten.
