Used extensively to replace sugar, the so-called “intense” sweeteners are an essential tool in the processed-food industry. Ever since weight became a preoccupation, these zero-calorie substitutes have become omnipresent: today, more than 6,000 food and medicinal products contain aspartame, the most widely used chemical sweetener in the world. But the drug is at the centre of a debate. Several studies show that consuming it can have potential health risks. A South-American herb, stevia, which is naturally rich in sugar is the new green gold and could replace sweeteners. Has the industry discovered a miracle product?
