Mid-September 2009, in Aix-en-Provence, Marie-Hélène Martinez was put on trial along with her partner, Jean-Paul Steijns, for the murder of her children. In 2005, the body of a baby was found on the balcony of the apartment, the two others, aged 7 and 8, in the boot of a car. The last two had been poisoned with cannelloni mixed with toxic substances. The couple had then fled. Riddled with debt, had they really wanted “to start from scratch”, as they claimed? Or was their love too exclusive for the children to find a place within it?
