The Rental Market: the law of the jungle | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

It’s the biggest outlay, ahead of food and transport; a budget that has continued to increase over the last ten years: the rent. To such a point that today more than ten million French people are directly affected by the housing crisis. Owners justify themselves by citing the risks of unpaid rents and the difficulty in expelling undesirable tenants. How do they select their tenants? We followed a number of aspiring renters on their quest: young senior managers, or single mothers, despite their permanent jobs and seemingly comfortable incomes, meet with refusal after refusal. Faced with the scarcity of properties and with the multitude of guarantees demanded, more and more renters are tempted to make false declarations or even to fake their documents.
