The modus operandi is the same on each occasion: during the nights of the full moon, cows are gunned down at point blank range in their fields, then butchered for their meat. In the Gironde region of Reignac, seven cattle have been attacked in this way since the autumn and anxious breeders have introduced night patrols. Malicious intent or a black market in meat? Everybody in the village is wondering as the gendarmes go about their investigation. Elsewhere in the same department calves have been slaughtered right in the fields. However, on that occasion the attackers were caught by the owner: they claim they did it to feed their families.
