The Himalayas: the hidden face of the roof of the world | M6 | Enquête Exclusive
The Himalaya range, with its highest peaks in the world, has fascinated the most experienced of mountaineers for more than a century. Today, nearly 5 million tourists each year try to follow in their footsteps on a Nepalese adventure and the face of Katmandu, the hippie Mecca of the 1970s, has changed. An attraction that has its price: the capital of Nepal, with its one and a half million population is now the second most polluted city in the world! Despite that, the capital is bursting with agencies offering their services to tourists in search of excitement and breathtaking landscapes. This city is the starting point for the organized treks into the Himalayan foothills that are attracting more and more enthusiasts. But the region is full of surprises: further north, the city of Kasol has become the latest venue for party beasts. And more than half of them come from Israel, to let off steam after three traumatic years of National Service. The downside: many of these young people get into drugs and some even wander off and disappear into the mountains, sometimes never to be seen again. An enquiry into the hidden face of the Himalayas.
