Tahiti: sunny side, dark side | M6 | Enquête Exclusive
For those who love travel and foreign lands, Tahiti is a dream island with its blue lagoons, its coral reel and its luxury hotels. In fact, reality provides a stark contrast because shantytowns, drug trafficking and desperate poverty abound. So, even if tourism does bring the island two thirds of its revenues and provides work for a good part of the population, we shouldn’t forget that there is 60% more unemployment than in metropolitan France, an ever-increasing number of poor and frequent protests against price rises because everything is imported. On top of that, on this French territory, there is no unemployment insurance, nor minimum benefit. To escape, some go into trafficking of every description.
