They have become the bête noire of dictator Bachar el-Assad. The 60,000 inhabitants of the city of Azaz, near Aleppo, have managed to “liberate” their city, which for the last month and a half has been in the hands of Free Syrian Army rebels. A precarious liberty: last week, an aerial bombardment killed 40 people, mainly civilians. How do these rebel forces, who have sometimes committed reprisals, exercise their new power? A team from 66 Minutes was able to accompany Youssef, a businessman who emigrated to the Netherlands and returned to Syria to fight. He is the self-proclaimed head of security and operates patrols to ensure that Assad’s agents don’t try to infiltrate. When he intercepts an officer of the regular army who claims to be a deserter, that officer is in for a tough quarter of an hour…
