New York Fire Department: carrying on the fight | TF1 | Reportages
This is the first time a team of reporters has been allowed to observe the daily routines of the New York firefighters. With more than 11,000 employees and more than three attendances per minute, these fire warriors of the Big Apple form the largest firefighting force in the United States. Devastating fires in restaurants or homes, rescuing a teenager lost in a sea of ice or training sessions in a school that is worthy of the greatest of movie studios: the everyday routine of New York firefighters is rich and, above all, unpredictable. Over a month a team for Grands Reportages shared the daily lives of three members of the famous New York Fire Department. While some fight fires, others bring support to the most deprived people in the city. Encounters can leave indelible memories, such as that with one of the greatest stars of American cinema. For every intervention, NY firefighters are equipped with a number of miniature cameras. They are exceptional equipment so as to capture every moment of the work done by these men and women, who are regularly confronted by the most unusual of fires. The Rescue 3 firehouse is base to the elite Bronx brigade. They are the ones called up as back up when a fire gets out of control. In this deprived neighborhood of New York, fires are an everyday occurrence. Bob is the doyen of Rescue 3. With nearly 40 years experience, the firefighter gives us his analysis and his vision of a job in which zero risk is non-existent. The city’s firefighters also include medical personnel in their ranks. One of them, Cyndie, was born and grew up in Seine-Saint-Denis. Arriving in the United States at the age of 19, the paramedic spends her nights on the streets of Manhattan providing assistance to the most deprived.
