MONGOLIA: NOMADS OF THE HIGH MOUNTAINS | France 5 | Les Routes de l'Impossible
In the heart of the frozen Altai Mountains in western Mongolia, a nomadic family is preparing to face the most dangerous challenge of the year: a 120-kilometre seasonal migration through snow, freezing temperatures and blizzards. To save their herds from starvation, Bazarbay, Talap and their relatives must drive nearly 200 animals to their summer pastures.
Among them is seven-year-old Daryn, embarking on his first major journey. Heartbroken after his beloved horse is sold, the young boy is given a task by his father: to look after “Doudou,” a fragile young calf, and a goat about to give birth. It is a responsibility that will force him to grow up sooner than expected.
Around him, the adults battle extreme conditions. His uncle fears temperatures could plunge below -30°C: “If we get caught in a storm, we’re done for.” Camels collapse under their loads, vehicles break down, and powerful gusts threaten the convoy at every turn.
But beyond this extraordinary journey, it is an entire way of life that is hanging in the balance. Climate change is disrupting natural cycles and putting increasing pressure on families who have lived in harmony with their environment for centuries.
“The famines keep coming, and the weather is becoming unbearable,” Talap says.
