MOLENE: WHEN CATS TAKE OVER | M6 | 66 minutes

For several years now, stray cats have been a real problem on the small island of Molène in Brittany — and today they’ve become a genuine threat to both residents and local biodiversity.
Molène now has almost as many cats as inhabitants.
Walkers attacked, restaurants invaded, poisoned cats… The legendary calm of this 1-km² island is under threat, and tensions are rising among locals. This summer, an elderly woman even suffered a broken arm. Wildlife is also taking the hit: the island is home to Europe’s largest colony of a strictly protected species of small seabird, which hungry feral cats feast on.
The town hall has decided to put a stop to it. Owners of domestic cats must now have them identified and registered — a kind of “cat trombinoscope” — or face a €750 fine. And above all, a large-scale campaign has been launched to capture and sterilize stray cats.
Will Molène — long nicknamed “the island of cats” — finally manage to rid itself of this scourge that is poisoning the lives of residents and tourists alike?
