Medieval combat: armored men cross swords | M6 | 66 minutes
Whether it’s sword fights, knightly jousts or spectacular confrontations between groups of 16 in armor and holding bucklers, the passionate followers of medieval combat have the Middle Ages in their blood. As a legitimate outsider in the next world cup to be held in the Czech Republic between 7 and 10 May 2015, the French team is dreaming of pinning a first medal to its… coat of chain mail. IT geeks, traders or lawyers, these adepts of armed combat come from a wide variety of professions. Through many intense training sessions, some deep in the Vincennes Wood, other in the South of France, they have learned to master not only sword, axe and mace, but also to defend themselves with their impressive shields. And in particular, how not to collapse under the weight of heavy armor of 25 kilos. On the muddy field, our Frenchmen will trade sword blows, punches and trips… Especially, in the combats with 16 against 16. The French team will not sleep in a hotel, but in tents as in the period. In an atmosphere heavy with clinking beer mugs and spit-roast pig, the tricolors will also have to brave the icy cold of the Czech spring. In medieval combat, confrontations can rapidly degenerate. A battalion of medics ready to unsheath their cures and bring assistance to the walking wounded will be on call. And a handful of referees have been appointed to ensure things don’t get totally out of hand.
