Mauritius, Aurore’s nightmare | M6 | 66 minutes

The Mauritian legal system has just pronounced sentence: Aurore Gros-Coissy was sentenced on Friday to 20 years imprisonment for drug trafficking. A verdict that was immediately dismissed by her family as a masquerade”. The 27 year-old Frenchwoman was arrested on August 19 2011 at the Port-Louis airport after 1,680 Subutex pills were found in her luggage. Subutex is a substitute for heroin sold on prescription in France, but banned in Mauritius, where it is the most highly used drug. Aurore Gros-Coissy, a native of the village of Saint-Romain-de-Popey in the Rhône, has always claimed she is innocent. Right from the beginning she explained that her Mauritian ex-boyfriend had given her a bag that was supposed to contain cakes. She was supposed to hand the parcel to the boyfriend’s mother, Giantee Ramchum, the Frenchwoman’s co-accused and handed the same prison sentence. The two women were found guilty on November 27 and risked prison terms of between 14 and 60 years. During the trial, which opened in September, the prosecutor, Asha Egan-Ramano, described the Frenchwoman as an “intelligent and cunning” person, who could not have been ignorant of the trafficking organized by her ex-boyfriend.”
