At 24, Adrien is a true miracle survivor. Five years ago, he lived through a night of horror that nearly cost him his life — and left him with devastating, lasting injuries.
On the evening of September 21, 2020, he is at home in Pont-à-Mousson, in eastern France.
His mother is away, and he is expecting a visit from a 16-year-old girl he has been seeing for some time: Cloé.
But as the two begin a sexual encounter, a man suddenly bursts in. Armed with a machete, he immediately attacks Adrien, striking him several times, particularly on the head and shoulder.
Adrien tries to shield himself with his hand — which is severed in the process.
Amid this extreme violence, Adrien manages to stay calm and escape.
He rushes to a nearby fast-food restaurant, where a former soldier administers first aid before emergency services arrive. Shortly afterwards, Cloé and the machete-wielding attacker are arrested. The assailant is Alexandre Polak, 26, believed to be the girl’s boyfriend.
But jealousy was not his motive. He acted out of revenge. Cloé had told him that Adrien — along with several of his friends — had raped her weeks earlier. In reality, the sexual encounter had been consensual, but she had managed to convince Alexandre to take revenge.
