LOCALS AGAINST TOURISTS : EVERY SUMMER IT IS THE WAR | M6 | Zone Interdite
France is the world’s foremost tourist destination: more than 90 million visitors in 2017, a record. An invasion that particularly affects the Côte d’Azur. During the summer season, seaside resorts are saturated. In Nice, the cars of thousands of travelers make everyday life hell for the residents. Tourists arrive in mass aboard highly-polluting ferries that endanger the health of the locals! The coast line is taken over by private beaches for wealthy tourists. To increase profits, some businesses set up illegal deckchairs, terraces and restaurants, to the detriment of locals, who no longer have access to certain beaches. With the explosion in rental platforms, every summer, the capital, Paris, becomes a theme park for tourists. Owners who rent their apartments to vacationers may be in for a nasty surprise. Laurie’s studio was wrecked by a Canadian tourist! Some locals are quite simply taken hostage by tourists of a rather special sort. The Teknival is a massive festival each year that brings together more than 150,000 fans of electronic music… for 5 days and 4 nights non-stop! At this illegal rave-party there are no security staff or cameras. The risks of disruption and fighting are much higher than at any other festival. Breaches of security are a constant anxiety for locals. With residents disgusted and towns and beaches overflowing, mass tourism during the summer season is a torment for some residents. The war lasted all summer long.
