Juarez : city of dead women | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

Juarez and El Paso are two twin cities with nothing in common. Juarez is Mexican, young, miserable and violent. El Paso, American city, is sleepy and rich. Between the two cities, the Rio Grande river. All along the American side, a steel barrier which is constantly surveyed by border police. As a means of halting the flood of illegal immigrants into the country, some North American companies have gone to Juarez, a few meters from the international border, where they’ve installed subcontracting factories, the maquilladoras. However these factories pay their employees meager wages and only hire women, considered more docile and faster workers. They earn only 3 francs fifty an hour (about fifty cents). And since 1993, these workers have been victims of a mysterious serial killer. According to Mexican and North American humanitarian organizations, over 800 women have disappeared in the desert which surrounds Juarez. They were all between sixteen and thirty two. All were raped and tortured before being killed. The local police contends the women themselves are responsible for the murders. Investigation on these serial murders.
