Drawers thrown on the ground, closets emptied, the mattress turned over, the bookcase upside down…Not a thing in the house has been spared : from the bathroom to the child’s room, everything has been sacked. “We have the feeling of being raped.” For Jean Raymond and Jérôme, members of the anti-burglary unit (CAC), it’s an everyday scene : two reports a day. The CAC is an experimental police unit unique in France and they are the only two policemen in it. Created at Evry, this unit works exclusively on burglaries, for these are among the most difficult offenses to elucidate-there’s only one chance upon ten that the stolen objects will be found. Those committing the burglaries can be neighbors in the apartment building or young people, often minors, in search of easy money. Because of fear of reprisals, witnesses are rare, and it’s rare to catch anyone in the act. However, thanks to laborious investigations in the proximity, the CAC has been able to dismantle a whole network : from the thief to the fence. Thanks to information from an informer, they discover in a basement 10 mountain bikes, a laser player, a video game console…The rest has already been sold.
