How the homeless live in summer | M6 | 66 minutes
It is estimated that in Paris there are nearly 8000 people without fixed abode. In the winter there are a number of associations who assist this particularly vulnerable sector of society. In summer many facilities are closed and donations are not so generous. And yet many homeless people die just the same. Heat, lack of hydration and care make life difficult for those without shelter. That is why some of them decide to move south as soon as the fine weather begins. We follow some who have made this choice. One special place they go is Sète, a small seaside commune in the south of France. A group of people there got together a few months ago to help the homeless. On Tuesdays the group goes scrounging and offers time and food to the deprived. But it must be said that these people are not welcome in Sète. The mayor introduced an anti-begging law in his town. (Only a few communes made a similar decision.) Gatherings of dogs and the consumption of alcohol in the streets are banned. A small patrol group has even been formed to move on undesirable groups of homeless people. The patrol operates from 1.00 PM till 8.00 PM and asks the destitute to leave the town center. What is life like for these people? Why do some towns get rid of their beggars? How can those with homes and those without live together? Those are the questions to which we try to find some answers.
