Housing estates: job talk | M6 | 66 minutes
“Awright then?” That’s her way of saying “hello” to her friends. Her name is Sarah and she’s 20 years old and a mother. She’s looking for work in the restaurant trade. There’s one problem: Sarah has a look and a way of talking that is typical of estate neighbourhoods, which deter some employers. And it is not easy to shake it off. So Sarah has decided to take a new form of training: a professional coach, herself from the estates, is teaching these young women to “fit the mould” by changing their appearance and also working on their elocution and their punctuality. Codes, language and clothes: an investigation into the invisible barrier that can put certain young people outside of the job market.
