HEALTH INSURANCE FRAUD: THE PRIVATE NURSE WHO LIVED LAVISHLY USING HIS PATIENTS’ HEALTH INSURANCE CARDS | M6 | 66 minutes
Over a six-year period, Stéphane C., a 50-year-old private practice nurse, embezzled more than one million euros from France’s Social Security system. Using the proceeds of this fraud, he enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle, spending lavishly on artwork, lavish parties, sports cars and luxury hotels.
His scheme eventually came to light when the CPAM (France’s primary health insurance fund) in La Rochelle uncovered the deception. Stéphane C. had been billing the system for a large number of fictitious medical procedures, claiming reimbursement for treatments allegedly provided to deceased patients or to individuals who had moved abroad. The nurse was receiving reimbursements for four times more treatments than the average nurse in the region.
Since then, all of his assets have been seized and sold at auction. One might have expected Stéphane C.’s reckless spending spree to end there. However, he never appeared for his trial and has been on the run for more than a year. Investigators eventually tracked him down to a luxurious riad in Marrakech, reportedly financed with money fraudulently obtained from the French Social Security system.
