Haiti: orphans of the quake | M6 | 66 minutes
Line Vanessa, aged 5, escaped by a miracle: she was pulled alive from the rubble of the Notre Dame de la Nativité orphanage in Port-au-Prince, after being trapped beneath it for 48 hours. A rescue that was filmed at the time by “66 Minutes”, just after the earthquake of January 12 2010. One year after the disaster, one of our crews returned to the orphanage where 56 children perished. Today, nothing remains of the building. A makeshift dormitory had to be built to house fresh young orphans. Wesley, aged 3, who had a leg amputated, is learning to walk there. Evelyne, the head of the orphanage, has support from several French people who have come as volunteers. However, a fresh danger stalks the 80 children waiting to be adopted: cholera, which has already killed more than 3,600 people on the island.
