Fire: the scandal of the slums | M6 | 66 minutes

Two weeks ago a terrible fire took the lives of two people and injured 16 others in a building unfit for occupation in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. A tragedy that has cast the spotlight on the disastrous state of housing in this extremely poor commune: one dwelling in three is unfit. A few steps from the fire-ravaged building, we followed the everyday experiences of the inhabitants of another slum. In apartments without either water or electricity, families with children sometimes live among rats. The high level of dampness even induces diseases, as with the young girl of 9 who was taken into hospital suffering from pneumonia. Despite proceedings taken by the city hall, the owners continue to make a profit from these disgraceful dwellings.
