Fatal jealousy | France 3 | La vie comme un roman

3 years ago, in a small village in the North of France, Serge Anquier, a family man with no history, was found dead, burned to death in his car. His tragic death left a widow and 3 orphans. 3 months later, Jean-Léon Cazier, a small garage owner, with no police record is arrested for the murder of Serge Anquier. Crazed with jealousy, he was accused of burning alive the man he believed was his wife’s lover. In June 2007, after 3 years in custody, Jean-Léon Cazier appeared before the Amiens court to answer for the premeditated murder of Serge Anquier. As an exception, the Court allowed us to film the whole of the 3-day trial. In the court corridors, and during the 30 hours in the courtroom, our cameras filmed the work of all those with the heavy responsibility of delivering justice. Did the accused really kill because he was a deceived husband? Will his wife, who testifies in court, tell the whole truth? Jean-Léon Cazier admits to having committed the crime, but he denies it was premeditated murder. How will his lawyer defend a man, whom everybody accuses? During the whole trial, the jury of the people will try to understand what pushed Jean-Léon Cazier to commit this crime. Before the trial we also filmed the family of the victim and that of the accused in their homes, in their respective villages. We wanted to understand what each was expecting from Justice in this affair, what they feared, what they hoped for.
