Behind the sometimes violent demonstrations of recent weeks lies a deep unease among French farmers, who are gradually disappearing. In 1960 they were 2 million, today 500,000 and 12,000 businesses shut down every year, in particular stock and dairy farms. An investigation into those farmers who are forced into bankruptcy and have to auction off their equipment and their herds. The most desperate choose another escape: suicide, an increasing phenomenon in recent times. In the Rhône-Alpes region there have been around forty this year. Witness Fabrice, a breeder in Isère, who tried to hang himself and was saved in the nick of time.
