Every year more than 500,000 French tourists visit Egypt to see the monuments from the time of the pharaohs such as the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley of the Kings. The price of such a trip, slashed by tour operators, has largely contributed to the tenfold increase in the traditional infatuation with the region. Now affordable by all, Nile cruises have finally choked up the river. Even aboard 5-star ships, holidaymakers are no longer spared disappointment, not to mention the scams that are still possible. This reverse side of the post card holds many surprises for the tourist. And yet, in this land ravaged by poverty, revenues from tourism represent a considerable manna.
