Dangerous dogs | M6 | 66 minutes
A wave of serious accidents caused by dogs last June (two children dead and four injured in less than seven weeks) has reopened the debate on the problem of dangerous dogs in France. The law of January 6 1999, aimed at reducing the number of bitings (still around 80,000 per year needing medical attention) is seeing its effectiveness reexamined. New legislation, currently under scrutiny as part of the discussion on the law on delinquency is intended to introduce the notion of the dangerousness of dogs into the penal code, without necessarily referring to any particular breed. Because the problem does not necessarily come from the type of dog itself (pit-bull, rottweiler, etc) but from the dog’s training and its background.
