Colombia, mayor courage | M6 | 66 minutes
Armed to the teeth: bullet-proof vests, automatic rifles, they are there to protect. Every time she leaves her house Cielo Gonzales risks her life. For her protection there are no less than two motorcycles, an escort car and ten bodyguards. Every time that she moves around they apply the same principles as in Beirut or Baghdad: her heavily armoured car must never stop, even at road junctions. For the last three years, Cielo Gonzales has been mayor of the city of Neiva, population 350,000, in Columbia. She never takes a step, day or night, without her bodyguards. She lives under sentence of death. She was elected in one of the most dangerous places on the planet. The city of Neiva is in the middle of a zone that is held by the Farc: a guerrilla group that is known in particular for kidnapping Ingrid Betancourt. As an ally of the Columbian president in the war against the Farc, Cielo Gonzales is a symbol of power that the rebels want to strike down. She has already escaped three assassination attempts. She lives with her parents and her brother, all under threat, in a fortified building: perimeter walls over sixteen feet high, barbed wire and guards around the clock. In a little over three months her mandate will end and she is not eligible for re-election. She will return to being a simple citizen with no bodyguards. She has already planned to leave Columbia with her family for at least a year.
