Ciudad Juarez, Mexico | M6 | 66 minutes
Ciudad Juarez in the North of Mexico. A border town with a population of 2 million that is in the hands of drug traffickers. 100 tonnes of cocaine pass through here every year. For the last 15 years, police have regularly discovered the corpses of women. Murders that are particularly barbaric.Since 1993, more than 400 bodies have been discovered around the town. Even more worrying: 800 young women are reported missing. Ciudad Juarez has thus become the most dangerous city in the world for women. A reputation that has reached Hollywood, where screenwriters have jumped on the case.Who is killing the women of Ciudad Juarez? And why can’t the police catch the guilty person or persons? The attitude of the authorities, who from the outset have followed one false trail after another, is worrying. Suspects who claim they are innocent die mysterious deaths in prison. The theory favoured by the Mexican government is that drug traffickers are responsible: they rape and kill these hundreds of women simply for pleasure. The local police is said to shut its eyes to the situation. Now, 12,000 soldiers patrol the streets and bars are forced to close at nightfall.Over the last three years the rate of murders and disappearances has finally slowed. But the guilty parties are still free. And the women of Ciudad Juarez live in fear.On average, every month two new corpses are discovered in the desert.
