Chile: trapped at the bottom of a mine | M6 | 66 minutes
“We’re fine, the 33, in the safety area.” It was via this message, after 17 days of unbearable waiting that the families of the Chilean miners trapped half a mile underground learned that their loved ones were alive. Since then an unprecedented rescue mission has been mounted. A drill brought from Australia has to bore a hole a little over 2 feet wide to allow the miners to be brought up. Experts from NASA have been called in to counsel the 33 miners on how to survive under extreme conditions. Meanwhile, on the surface, the families are doing everything possible to keep up the men’s morale. The news from below seems to get better every day. A report from a country where life is now geared to this dramatic story.
