Burma (Myanmar): a people in danger | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial
Four weeks after the passage of cyclone Nargis, our crew was able to get through to villages that were still completely cut off and struggling to survive. In the ruins of remote villages the bodies of humans and animals still lie in the water. All along the road that crosses the Irrawady there are refugees who have fled their villages where everything was swept away. They camp out, in the utmost destitution, along the sides of this road. Their only aid is the food and blankets brought by volunteers. The villagers have pooled their stocks of rice, which have turned grey, under plastic sheets to dry it. That is all we’re going to eat. It’s not very good, but we’ll eat it all the same, says one villager. The aid distributions, which the military were supposed to be organising and which are constantly being shown on television, are nowhere to be seen.
