From the autumn of 2007, the French school postcode system has been more flexible. In theory, parents can choose their child’s educational establishment. But in reality, this freedom is relative.  Lots of requests, but very few chosen. In Paris in 2010, only one dispensation in four was granted. The result: trickery and other wangles are more common than  ever. So how do you get the school of your choice? In the final analysis has this reform helped the less well-off or reinforced “ghetto” schools? An investigation into the failures of postcode flexibility.
