Bali, another holiday destination in danger? | France 2 | Envoyé Spécial

It’s one of the smallest islands of the Indonesian Archipelago, a blue-green speck set on the water some 12,000 km from France. However, its reputation is gaining it a notoriety… that is growing! Beaches, rice paddies, volcanoes and the sweet life… is Bali now a model of an earthly paradise? The island of the gods is attracting more and more French people. Formerly frequented by the jet set, it’s become democratic, with tour operators offering resort or hiking holidays, accommodation with the locals or in a luxury eco-lodge. Travel agencies and Internet sites are now boasting of holidays that are both unforgettable and cheap, comfortable hotels at €10 a night, meals at two euros and they are even selling villas with swimming pool and tropical garden at €50,000. However, the island also has a darker side that is related to this invasive tourism: every year 4 million Balinese have to live alongside 3 million tourists from all over the world. How can you not lose your identity? How do you manage the tons of garbage and not waste the water resources that are drying up? The gods are laying down a challenge to Bali…
