Alcohol: woman lift the taboo | M6 | 66 minutes
The subject is taboo: young French woman are drinking increasingly heavily. With an average of around ten glasses of wine per month, alcohol consumption by women under 25 has risen by nearly 10% over the last year, whereas consumption by men has fallen. Who are these students who have a drink in the morning before going to classes? Mothers of families who drink in secret? How are they perceived by those around them? In this report, women lift the taboo. They speak openly about an addiction that society still tolerates less among women than men. Anne-Sophie, 25, celebrates the end of the university year by indulging in the notorious “binge drinking”?flat-out boozing?in vogue with young people. “Girls drink as much as we do,” say the boys. Whisky-Coke, Mojito, vodka, beer, it all goes down. Anne-Lise who was once a very pretty young girl is now 41, but looks fifteen years older. She drinks from the moment she gets up: a bottle of whisky per day. It started with parties then there was a divorce and a miscarriage. The little comforting glass then the slippery slope to hell. Because of the alcohol she lost not only her job as kitchen assistant, but also custody of her 3 year-old son. Olivia, however, managed to escape. After years of chaos where she admits she “preferred alcohol to her children”, this young middle-class woman took drastic measures: she shut herself in a room for six months.
