The RAID (acronym of Research-Assistance-Intervention-Dissuasion) is born at the end of 1985. Elite unit of the French national police force, it is also a secret one. Men in black, hooded and over-trained, able to face the most catastrophic crises. We penetrated, for the first time since its creation, behind the scenes of the RAID. We trace the history of this elite unit which, for 20 years, has been closely linked with the greatest terrorist affairs or with organized crime: the hostage-taking incident at the Law courts of Nantes, the islamists affair of Roubaix, the neutralization of Human Bomb in a nursery school in Neuilly, the arrest of the members of Action Directe or, more recently, the arrest of Ivan Colonna. We endeavoured to understand what pushes these men and women to engage their own life for protecting that of unknown people.
