The heroes of Manhattan | France 3 | Des racines et des ailes

Never have so many firemen’s lives been lost at one event as during the September 11, 2001 attack. In one day, more than 300 of them died while trying to save those imprisoned in the World Trade Center. There were more dead in a few minutes in the ranks of these soldiers of fire” than in the whole of the past fifty years. All means available were activated to deal with the catastrophe. All the New-York City fire stations were involved. Although they are still reeling from the tragedy, the firemen continue to carry out their work every day. Volunteers have joined them and the public has demonstrated an unprecedented solidarity.Starting on September 11 and for several weeks, we filmed the daily life of these anonymous men and women, the new heroes of America. An exceptional document which takes us into the reality of a society undermined by doubt and fear.”
