Indonesia : Slaves of volcano | M6 | Les Chemins de l'Impossible

For two dollars a day, Andy and his friends descend into the depths of Kawa Ijen crater, the biggest in Indonesia, in order to extract sulfur. The conditions of extraction are terrible. The temperatures are around 400 degrees C and the vapors from the sulfur burn the eyes, the mouth and the lungs. Once they have gathered enough blocks of sulfur in their baskets (which represents about 100 kilograms), they climb back up the crater by foot, carrying them on their backs which have been deformed by the weight. In the village they will resell the sulfur to the mineral companies. But Andy wouldn’t change jobs for all the world. It enables him to have the most beautiful house in the village. He even has a fridge and a real couch, and best of all, he has the means to spoil his small eight-year old daughter.
